After traveling for about 7 hours on a night bus from Barcelona (we’ve decided that night buses are the way to go: you save money on a hostel and you don’t waste your day!) Anne and I arrived in San Sebastian. We got there before the hostel was open, but luckily someone was able to let us in. After checking in and getting all that sorted out, we decided to explore the town. Unfortunately it was raining, but that didn’t stop me from falling in love with San Sebastian within the first 15 minutes of walking around. It has the nice relaxed atmosphere of a Spanish town but the beautiful architecture of a French town (or at least what I imagine a French town would be lie). Even with the rain, this town seemed too good to be true. That night (Tuesday) we met up with a few of our friends from Granada who were also passing through and went out to experience San Sebastian nightlife.
Wednesday was still cloudy, but not nearly as cold. After a relaxed morning, Anne and I climbed (walked, really) up Mont Urgull for a spectacular view of the beaches, the ocean and the city. That afternoon we went to sit on the beach for a bit and learned the hard way that high tide at La Playa de la Conch literally covers the entire beach.
Thursday, our last day, was finally sunny! Although I would have loved this town regardless, the sun made a huge difference. The water was bluer, the hills were greener, and the people were happier! We spent most of the day lying on the beach watching the surfers and the waves.
San Sebastian was the perfect place to pair with Barcelona. Unlike in Barça, there isn’t really a whole lot to do in SS…but I mean this in the best way possible. The town caters to having a perfectly relaxing experience, taking your time with whatever you feel like doing, and not having an agenda. I really couldn’t have asked for a better Semana Santa (Spring break).
